A New General Atlas (1828) bound with Atlas Classical, or Select Maps of Ancient Geography (1827)
Philadelphia: Anthony Finley, 1827-1828. Hardcover. Small folio, 14 x 11 inches, contemporary half leather. Good copy: binding somewhat rubbed and used, recent cloth over spine with remains of original spine leather laid down, inner hinges neatly strengthened; contents mainly very good with only a few exceptions: the map of Canada is worn with some long clean tears; the map of Switzerland has some edgewear; the map of Turkey in Asia has a 2" tear to bottom margin that enters the plate by about half an inch, the map of Scandinavia has a 4" tear that goes into the plate 3 inches, the map of Germany has some light stains; and the double-page chronological chart which is the last plate of the Atlas Classica, shows some smudges and light brown stains. Collated complete with 60 full page colored maps, plus 10 maps in the Atlas Classica, with a double-page map of the Roman Empire. Includes a world map on Mercator's projection, North America, United States, state maps of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Missouri. In addition to the world maps there is a "Comparative Height of Mountains" map and a similar one for rivers. Rare in the trade and uncommon to find this with the Atlas Classica. We think the tears are easily mended but prefer to not do it ourselves because we sometimes louse things up. Good. Item #H29421
