The New and Complete Universal Letter-Writer, bought at Zadok Cramer's Pittsburgh bookstore in 1804

London: Printed for Alex. Hogg, Ca. 1790. First Printing. Hardcover. 7 x 4.25 inches, leather backed boards, fair copy, light restoration to spine, boards quite rubbed and darkened with quarter-sized loss of paper covering in the middle of the front board, contents good, general tanning and light wear, occasional old tide-lines from long ago waterstains, title page with clean 3" repaired horizontal tear, lacks most of the last leaf of the index. Various ownership signatures, the most prominent being that of Jesse Cretin to the front flyleaf, "Bought in Zadock Cramer's Book Store Pittsburgh Market Street price 37 1/2 cents, April 12th 1804." He has also signed the rear endpaper and dated it 1814 and there are also signatures of a John Middleswart on rear endpapers -- Middleswart is a name associated with Washington County PA, which is where we acquired this volume (in an old estate). Paginated 220 (i.e. 120) pp. -- for whatever erroneous and unprofessional reason Worldcat/OCLC has the pagination of this edition as 212 (i.e. 112) pp., but the next edition from 1800 is also erroneously paginated to 396 (i.e. 96) pp, so we're confident this is the 1790 first edition. Very uncommon to find books purchased from Cramer's store this early; he was also a publisher, including of the legendary "Navigator" that provided information and maps of the Ohio, Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers for riverboats and keelboatmen. We could find out nothing at all about Jesse Cretin. The book provides guidance & examples of letters for family matters and advice, courtship, business, social engagements, legal matters, religious concerns, forms of address, etc, as well as advice on character, morals, ethics, piety, vice, etc. Fair.
