A Miscellany, First Series I-X -- inscribed

Boston: Merrill Moore, 1939. First Printing. Hardcover. 8vo, publisher's red cloth, very good, inscribed to a John C. Beale by Moore in 1951. Contains: The Fugitive, Clippings and Comment (1939); Poems from the Fugitive (2nd issue, with "Ego," 1938); Sonnets from the Fugitive, 1922-26 (1937); Foreword to the Noise that Time Makes and other reviews of the book; Sonnets from the Sewanee Review (1938); Six Sides to a Man (1939); Ego (1938); Sonnets from New Directions (1938); The Sonnets of Merrill Moore, by Dudley Fitts (1939); and The Mental Measure of Merrill Moore, by F.L. Wells (London, 1939). Although miscellaneous medical reprints and items are mentioned on the title, none here, same as with almost all we've seen or read about. Moore attended Vanderbilt University and hung out with the Fugitive crowd there, where John Crowe Ransom took an interest in him. He also got to know William Carlos Williams who gave him some encouragement as a fellow physician-poet. But his lack of talent and relentless self-promotion continue to negatively impact the market value of his books. The pamphlet published by New Directions is quite scarce. Except for the first publication, which has its front wrap only, both front and rear wraps have been bound in with each publication. Includes 1957 short note from Moore's assistant to Beale informing him that she had hoped that Moore would recover enough to respond to Beale's letter, but alas, he died. Very good. Item #H30577
