Statement by A. W. Gauger and others re Senate Bill 1243, promoting synthetic fuels made from coal

Pittsburgh: 1943. Wraps. A folder full of material regarding Senate Bill 1243, authorizing the construction and operation of demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal and other substances, in order to aid the prosecution of the war, to conserve and increase the oil resources. A hearing jointly held by Senate and Congress was conducted in Pittsburgh on August 6, 1943, and this folder gathers pro-industry statements as well as newspaper clippings reporting on the hearing. This appears to be Gauger's own copy, or owned by someone closely associated with him, as the folder is from the Penn State School of Mineral Industries, where Gauger was director of research. His statement is 12 pp. Also included is the statement of Howard N. Eavenson, a Pittsburgh based mining engineer who was also president of a coal company in KY (2 pp.); H. H. Storch's statement on Synthetic Liquid-Fuel Processes (principal physical chemist for the Bureau of Mines, 6 pp.); Richard Maize, Secretary of the PA Dept. of Mines (3 pp.); "The Production of Liquid Fuels from Coal and Lignite," statement by A. C. Fielder, Chief, Fuels and Explosives Service, Burea of Mines (17 pp.), "The Manufacture of Motor Fuels and Synthetic Petroleum, Especially from Coal," by J. P. Williakms, Jr., president of Koppers (21 pp.) and statement by Eugene Ayres, a chemical engineer at Gulf Oil (2 pp.), plus several newspaper clippings. Overall very good condition, light wear, some of the statements on brittle and tanned paper, newspaper clippings also tanning. Depletions in oil reserves because of the war led to increased research on alternative kinds of fuel. Very good. Item #H30634
