Yangon / Rangoon: The People's Handbook and Temple of Literature, Ca. 1955. Hardcover. Small 8vo, 7.25 x 5 inches, publisher's dark ruddy red boards stamped in gilt, very good, containing 6 short books in wraps, both front and rear wraps bound in, no date, but probably mid-1950s. 5 of the 6 books appear to be illustrated novelettes of life in Burma / Myanmar, plus a life of Gandhi. Authors / Titles (in English, as best we can do with translation software): Sand Falls, or U Bo Mya's Regret, by Lyunt U; Food is Medicine, by Yun-U; Leader Gandhi, by Maung Phyo; I Think It's Wrong, by Maung Hyat Hla; You Continue, by Aye; and Ray First, by Singi. The tales center around the modernization of rural Burmese life. In the first story U Bo Mya owns some cattle which he highly prizes. One gets sick and a veterinarian helps him out. In Food is Medicine, the mother is wasting away because of an improper diet. First she goes to see a soothsayer, but that's no help; it's only when a nutritionist suggests a more balanced diet of meat, fish, vegetables and rice does she improve. In You Continue, a young man falls ill with tuberculosis, and recovers after some time in a hospital getting proper treatment. Etc. Undated but probably mid 1950s-60s, and hard to get a sense of whether any of these are in institutions: Worldcat's a little clunky when it comes to Myanmar language items. Very good. Item #H30712
