Cairo: Sebah; Abdullah Freres; G. Lekegian, Ca. 1890. 21 large photographs, the majority with places and studios identified in the plate. 4 of them are by Lekegian and are mounted on backing stock; the others are loosely attached to backing sheets with old corner tabs and can be removed easily. With the exception of one of the Lekegian photos that has a few surface abrasions, all the photos are very good or better, bright and crisp images, the backing sheets have been recently trimmed, with the exception of the 4 by Lekegian. Gabriel Lekegian (ca. 1853-1920) was an Armenian painter and photographer, active in Cairo especially in the 1890s. The Abdullah Freres were a group of three Ottoman brothers of Armenian descent, Viçen Abdullahyan (1820–1902), Hovsep Abdullahyan (1830–1908), and Kevork Abdullahyan (1839–1918), photographers of international fame during the late Ottoman Empire. They took pictures of scenic views and notable individuals, including sultans. In 1886, at the request of the Khedive in Egypt, they opened a branch in Cairo, Egypt. Jean Pascal Sébah (1872 – 947) was a Syriac-Armenian photographer. The son of Pascal Sébah, he continued the Sébah family's photographic legacy in Cairo after his father's death in 1886 and was the head of the business by 1888. The firm developed a reputation as the leading representative of Orientalist photography and in 1889 was appointed the Photographers by Appointment to the Prussian Court. In 1893, Sultan Abdulhamid II sponsored fifty-one photographic albums representing the span of the Ottoman Empire with two of the volumes produced by Sebah & Joaillier. Grover Cleveland was one of the recipients of the photo collection and it is now in the Library of Congress. Very good. Item #H32077
