Vienna; Wien, etc. A small collection related to the work and exhibitions of Josef Mikl (1929-2008), an well known and critically well regarded abstract modernist Austrian artist who worked in a number of mediums including artist's books, and who represented Austria at the 1968 Venice Biennale. From the collection of Nicholas Unkovic, a prominent attorney and arts patron in the Pittsburgh area; Mikl exhibited at the vaunted Carnegie Internationals in 1952 and 1961. Mikl, who was an iconoclast and preferred not to be linked to any particular movement or school, was nevertheless a part of the St. Stephan school of artists founded by Wolfgang Hollegha, et al. We have: 1) "Mikl" Katalog 11, Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts, 1964. Wraps, very good. Inscribed in pencil to Mr. and Mrs. Unkovic by Mikl. There is a second copy of this in fine condition as well. 2) Large broadside for a show at Galerie nacht St. Stephan, 1964. 22.5 x 8.75" with poem and drawings by Mikl. Folded at center, else fine, with a second copy in very good condition with light abrasion along top edge. 3) Announcement for a 1969 show along with Gunter Knipp at the Kunsthalle Bremen, in mailing envelope. 4) Large flyer (11.5 x 8.25" folded) for a 1969 show at St. Pietersabdfij Gent, 4 pp. with illustrations and a list of works and Mikl's works in major exhibitions, light wear, along with another copy in fine condition. 5) Broadside flyer with illustrations advertising 1961 show "olbilder tribuswinkel" at Galerie St. Stephan, 12.5 x 9.5" with light rumpling. 6) Josef Mikl: Olbilder Graphik Druckgraphik, 1965 bis 1972. Wien, Akademie der bildenden Kunste, 1972. Inscribed to Unkovic in 1972. About 50 pp, light wear and corner bumping. Annotated list of exhibits and works, with many illustrations, some in color. 7) Large folding broadside advertising Mikl's "Kinderbucher" at Galerie St. Stephan in 1962. Some pencil annotations giving translations into English, can probably be erased. Some tanning and light wear. 25 x 9 inches. A duplicate copy in fine condition (some tanning). 8) Handsome flyer for a show at Galerie der Spiegel, Koln, 1963. 7 x 6" one sheet of gray-blue laid paper folded to make 4 pp. with illustration on cover. 9) "Austria," XXXIV Biennale di Venezia, 1968. Inscribed to the Unkovics in 1972 in pencil. 12 x 9 inches, 16 unnumbered pages with a number of plates in color. With another copy, this one expanded to include the other artist representing Austria, Roland Goeschl. 10) Envelope with 4 pp. flyer advertising an opening for a limited edition artist book by Mikl in Vienna in 1972. Envelope with Mikl's signature in ink on verso and with inscription to the Unkovics in ink on front panel with a drawing that stretches to the back panel of some kind of many-legged animal with long nose and long tail. 11) Gemalde und Handzeichnungen, 1969 exhibition at Ausstellung Kunsthalle Bremen. Booklet for a show, 20 pp, illustrations, inscribed in pencil to the Unkovics by Mikl. 12) Josef Mikl: Zeichnungen, 1979 show at the Graphische Sammlung Albertina. Stiff wraps, illustrated, some in color, fine copy with slip signed by Mikl in ink loosely inserted. 13) Large 4 pp. advertisement for Mikl's artist's book "Hawranek, Einige Untaten der Journalistenfresserin" at Galerie der Spiegel in Koln, 1960s, with another flyer affixed to it. A second copy, slightly worn with second smaller flyer loosely inserted. Very good. Item #H33283
