Ca. 1917 General Mail Order Catalog of the Chalif Normal School of Dancing

New York: Chalif Normal School of Dancing, Ca. 1917. Wraps. 7 x 5 inches, 23 pp. Very good, with another 4 pp. flyer included, in original mailing envelope addressed to Karl Heinrich, a ballet master, teacher and performer in Pittsburgh; envelope with light wear and soil. The catalog is mainly a list of all the dances and arrangements the Chalif produced, plus books, shoes and other dance commodities. No date, but the address on 57th St. is for Chalif's new building that he commissioned in 1916. Chalif was a Jewish dancer from Odessa. When he was nine years old, he attended the Odessa Government Theater where he was mentored by Thomas Laurentiyevich Nijinsky, father of dancers Vaslav Nijinsky and Bronislava Nijinska. Chalif has been attributed as the author of around 1,200 ballets and dance compositions, which were categorized into several dance genres based on their difficulty. The works covered the "Aesthetic, Ballet, Ballroom, Character, Folk, Historical, National, and Pantomime" genres, according to writer Dick Oakes. Five of his works were translated into other languages. Chalif's work also includes 120 folk dances and 35 ballets. To promote his school and dance societies, Chalif is said to have distributed twenty thousand mail-order catalogs worldwide. Very good. Item #H33303
