Bound in old law calf with red spine label, good with some rubbing and wear to binding, cracking along outer joints, light foxing, bookplate on pastedown, previous owner's name-address sticker on flyleaf, frontispiece, 352 pp. Uncommon in the trade. Henry Smith (1769-1862) published letters in The Christian Advocate and Journal and The Western Christian advocate in the early 1800's and then had them republished in book form in 1848 and 1854, under the title Recollections and Reflections of An Old Itinerant. He was admitted into the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1790, in 1793 admitted on trial as a traveling preacher to the Talbot Circuit, eastern shore Maryland; 1794 Clarksburgh Circuit Western Virginia; Redstone Circuit; Kentucky and he was licensed to preach in 1798. The early editions have been widely used by church historians in research regarding the early Methodist Episcopal Church. For 40 years Smith traveled through the woods and wilderness to preach the gospel. Letters mention encounters with Indians, Whisky Boys, preaching at Morgantown in 1795, Baptisms, travels in Kentucky, Fell's Point, the Pee Pee settlement (which was largely African-American), preaching at Williamsburg, etc. Good.
