Black Box No. 10: The Book of Hags, A Novel in the Form of a Radio Play

Washington DC: Watershed Foundation; The New Classroom, 1976. First Printing. 7.25 x 4.5 inches, printed pictorial cardboard portfolio housing cover sheet / contents and two cassettes. Near fine with a touch of soil and toning to cardboard container. A Fluxus-adjacent project that lasted from 1972 to 1979, these two cassettes are a special issue of Black Box with a single work by Deena Metzger, total running time 127 minutes. Participants in this production are Candace De Puy, Maureen Mc Ilroy, Naomi Pollack, Judy Chaikin, Ray Tatar, Mike Hodel, Eve Brenner, with music performed and arranged by Cantucha. Metzger is now best remembered as the woman in a photo from the early 1970s by Hella Hammid called, by turns, The Warrior, The Tree Poster, or simply The Poster, featuring Metzger triumphantly raising her arms, nude, showing her single mastectomy and in its place a tattoo of a tree, a very powerful visual of a woman's indomitable spirit in the face of breast cancer.
