London: J. Payne, 1755. Second Edition. Hardcover. 8vo, 7.25 x 5 inches, older marbled boards, re-spined in calf, retaining original spine label, contents very good and clean, with bookplate of Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904: an art connoisseur and dealer; in 1900 he donated his massive collection of prints, etchings, mezzotints and engravings to the New York Public Library -- the bookplate was engraved by Charles William Sherborn 1831-1912 who has been hailed as having led the revival in copper-engraved bookplates). Has all three plates, including the folding mezzotint of Prince Rupert. Contents in very good condition. Handsome copy of this first early study of prints, first published in 1662, with a very distinguished American provenance. This has the addition of a short biography of Evelyn. Very good.
