The second of Aelfric's two sets of homilies commences with Part 6. 8vo, 8.75 x 6 inches, softcover, in publisher's cream-yellow wraps, very good, light wear and soil to covers, text clean, bright and unmarked. Starting in 990 at the abbey of Cerne in Dorset, Aelfric began the two series of his English homilies, compiled from the Christian fathers, and dedicated to Sigeric, Archbishop of Canterbury, and completed them in 994. (The series were edited by Benjamin Thorpe and published in 1843–1846 for the Aelfric Society and edited more recently by Malcolm Godden and Peter Clemoes for the Early English Text Society.) This volume contains the fifth Sunday in lent. On the Lords passion, a sermon on the sacrifice on Easter day, Wednesday in Easter week, the apostles Philip and James, the invention of the holy cross, the Saints, Alexander, Eventius and Theodulus, on the greater litany, and on the greater litany: Tuesday.
