The Clockmaker; or the sayings and doings of Samuel Slick of Slickville, 3 volumes, First, Second, and Third Series (1838, 1839, 1840)
London: Richard Bentley, 1838-1840. Hardcover. 3 volumes, published 1838, 1839 and 1840, in original horizontally grained lavender cloth with gilt titles on spines, blind embossed designs on covers; the first two volumes stated Fourth Edition, the Third Series appears to be a First Edition and is a quarter inch taller than the first two. First two volumes are very good or better, unsophisticated, tightly bound, no wear to inner hinges, bookplates of Stanley Kidder Wilson (an author and advertising man, who published an introduction and bibliography to the works of John Leech with the Grolier Club in 1914) and older bookplates of J. T. Waddington (not much out there on him except that he paid for some of the restoration of Ely Cathedral); third volume has been neatly respined with original spine laid down, appears to have some work done to inner hinges and also appears from the stiffness when opening the book, that the text block has been glued to the spine. 8 plates drawn and etched by A. Hervieu and 5 by John Leech (in the Third Series). Very Good. Item #H3682
