Philadelphia: William F. Rackliff, 1839. Paperback. The first three numbers of this anti-slavery journal, 1839, in original aqua printed wraps, 134 pp total. Good copies, the first number shows some mild old damp stain to text, the second number likewise, with the last 20 pp showing some tanning and soil, and likewise the third number (mild dampstaining throughout). The Society was founded as an anti-slavery organization in the 1820s, with the idea of returning slaves to Liberia, with the additional moral and economic carrots of working with missionaries on both sides of the Atlantic to ensure conversion and embrace of Christianity and with selling points aimed at American businessmen to take advantage of Africa's natural and mineral resources, thus encouraging their own form of colonization. The society had its adherents and detractors; the journal is rare on the market, its articles focused on Africa. Good. Item #H3880
