Published 1834-1835, quarto (11 inches, 28 cm), old calf, with general title page for Vol. III, then nos. 1-26 of the complete Vol. III (206 pp.) and Vol. IV nos. 1-38 (324 pp.). The name changed for vol. IV to 'The Baltimore Southern Pioneer and Richmond Gospel Visiter'. We believe that it was after the last issue of vol. IV, the name changed once again to The Southern Pioneer and Philadelphia Liberalist which it kept for the remainder of 1835 and into 1836. A very good volume, binding lightly rubbed, contents with some foxing throughout, light occasional stains, occasional ink marks to margins. Each issue 8 pages long. This was one of the first periodicals that was utterly given to the promotion of Christian Universalism, a tgerm coined only a few years before by Russell Streeter to describe the tenets of Universalism as applied to Christianity. While there were Universalist churches as early as the 1780s, it took forty-plus years for these tenets to coalesce into a kind of movement, out of which, ultimately, grew Unitarianism. Very Good.
