Pittsburgh: The Bulletin Index, 1935-1937. Wraps. 55 issues, by no means a consecutive run. We have 36 issues from 1935, 16 from 1936 and 3 from January 1937. Each issue is 13 x 10 inches, 18 pp, mainly in very good condition, some in just good condition with moderate wear. Each issue with letters to the editor, news of various people, news of engagements and weddings, calendar of events for theater, sports, lectures, special events, clubs, music and art, various news articles of Pittsburgh interest, a society column, sports and art reviews, cinema, shopping guide, personal ads (starting sometime in 1936) and classifieds. All in all a great way to research Pittsburgh in all its aspects. Some of the personals are great insights into Pittsburgh's culture back then. Here's one from January 14, 1937: "I am a female chemist, who has been forced by our Pittsburgh steel employers to study typing. Can anyone of you readers tell me where a chemist with ideas and a mechanical nature far surpassing that of the average lady, as to the inside knowledge of washers, electric refrigerators and all home appliances, could obtain employment, without any further study on the doubly abhorrent and uninspiring shorthand? Signed, A Chemistress." This is accompanied by a postscript from her: "I have written for employment and received answers, without anyone investigating my ability, as to the fact that women chemists are a diverting influence in the laboratory, and so on, and am much hurt and amused by it all for I was the soul female in my chemistry class… I obtained honor marks in many of my courses, lifting and manipulating heavy motors and pieces of apparatus without the assistance of my supposedly more worthy and far superior fellow members, the male portion of the class…" And that's just one snippet from one magazine!
