First American edition of the Cruikshank illustrated version. 2 volumes. 8vo, 7.75 x 4.75 inches, bound in unusual and quite attractive dark brown publisher's floral blind embossed cloth, gilt spines, good to very good, light wear to corners, spine ends show some wear and loss, light wear along rear outer joint of first volume and also some loss to middle of spine neatly touched up with matching color so it doesn't show, contents very good, light to moderate foxing throughout, heaviest to endpapers and outer pages, early owner's name and info. on flyleaf of first volume and on first blank of second volume (Samuel Trull of Boston, 1814-1876, a physician who had a practice in the Bulfinch Triangle area of Boston; he trained at Harvard). With occasional plates by Cruikshank; the frontispiece of Dr. Sangrado reveals a character who would not have been out of place in Haight Ashbury, ca. 1969, down to what looks like a roach-clip he's holding, memoir by Thomas Roscoe.
