Paris: American Expeditionary Forces (A. E. F.), 1918-1919. Hardcover. Large folio, bound in half olive-brown morocco by McDougal, NY. 24 x 18 inches. Binding with light wear, scuffing, etc, and rear board reinforced at inner hinge and outer joint, contents have been expertly treated with silk gauze back in the 1930s, by Mrs. Charles H. Lawrence of NY (contents still tanned as usual). The most complete set of the WWI Stars and Stripes obtainable, with 71 issues (February 8, 1918 - June 13, 1919), each issue 8 pp., but this also includes the Anniversary Number (Feb. 8, 1919) published for the Staff and never circulated (almost like an April Fool's issue) which was a 4 pp.souvenir of the first annual banquet. It is hardly ever found. There is also the Pictorial Supplement of 8 pp. to the last issue, smaller in size, also lined with silk gauze, and the rarely seen September 28, 1918 "Fourth Liberty Loan" issue. In addition, there is a large photograph of Pershing, autographed by him, mounted on a preliminary page along with a signed typed note accompanying the photo. All this was compiled and bound by and for Major Lyle H. Gilmore (1886-1948) of Buffalo, NY, who then proceeded to do a survey of major libraries to see how complete their own holdings were. He then made a spread sheet of the 18 libraries, of which the most complete and similar to Gilmore's were copies in the American Legion library and the Hoover War Library; all other institutions seemed to lack one thing or another. Correspondance with the librarians, all from 1933, is included with this book, including a letter from John T. Winterich and a handwritten letter from Guy T. Viskniskki, the first editor of the Stars and Stripes. There is a bookplate from Pittsburgh bibliophile Charles T. Rosenbloom on the pastedown as well as a bookplate from Carnegie Mellon University library; their withdrawn stamp is on one of the terminal pages. Provenance: purchased directly from CMU in a larger deaccession of materials about ten years ago. Also included is are loose pages of an article from March 17, 1928 by Alexander Woollcott in the Saturday Evening Post on the history of Stars & Stripes. Several notable people were involved in the production of the Stars & Stripes: Harold Ross was one of its main editors; he would return to the states to become the founding editor of The New Yorker (celebrating its 100th anniversary in Feb. 2025); Woollcott's articles for the journal were collected in his 1919 book, "The Command is Forward." The sports page editor was Grantland Rice, whose career in sports journalism was unparalleled. Cyrus Baldridge, who provided many illustrations, became a top-tier illustrator, stage designer and printmaker. As we witness the decimation of the American military by its current Secretary of Defense and its turning away from its commitments to global harmony, this volume is a poignant reminder of a time when the American military was a source of pride at home and of hope and optimism for the rest of the free world.
