4 Vues D'Optique ca. 1780s: Vue Meridionale de la grande Place, dite la Carriere a Nancy; Vue Perspective du Palais du Duc d'Aveiro a Lisbonne; Pont du Diable, St. Gotthard Switzerland; Hospice du St. Bernard, Switzerland
Paris: Chez Daumont, Ca. 1780s. 4 hand colored copper engraved prints from the 1780s, each measuring approximately 19 x 14 inches and each with some conditional problems, making them overall good condition. The Nancy plate has some stains and soil and moisture tidemarks, 1.5" tear to top edge. The Lisbonne print also has waterstain tidemarks and marginal soil, light edgewear. The Pont du Diable (St. Gotthard) has had its margins neatly hand-colored, obscuring the original titles (titled on verso in an old hand; based on which, we think the hand-coloring is probably late 18th or early 19th century, too, since they wouldn't have needed to title it on the verso had they not colored over the printed title). Likewise, Hospice du St. Bernard has also had its margins colored in. This print shows some waterstain tidemarks and slight edgewear and rumpling to sides, similarly titled in an old hand on verso. Designed to be used in a zograscope viewer, also known as an optical diagonal viewer, which would give the print an almost 3-D perspective as well as reversing the lettering of the titles. Good.
