Compositions, Original and Selected, by Mrs. Jane Ames (1805)

Boston: E. Lincoln, 1805. First printing. Hardcover. First edition, 1805. Contemporary calf, 108 pp. About very good, some rubbing to binding, neat reinforcement to front inner hinge, p. 71 with some minor loss to top margin affecting one word on either side of the page. Most of this is prose, not poetry, with a Christian bent, including advice for her children, on spiritual and carnal joy (guess which is better!), etc. It has been established that Mrs. Jane Ames is the same author as Ms. J. Fenno, whose book of similar compositions was first published in 1791 and again in 1803, still using the name Fenno. Our copy of Compositions was succeeded by a 'second series' of the same length published in 1808; sometimes the two volumes are found bound together. An early American female poet, uncommon in the market, but given her strict Christian line of thought, there is hardly any notice of American life in the early 1800s. Good. Item #H4448
