All that we can find about the author is that he was born in 1763 in Angus, Scotland. Contemporary reviews of the book were not favorable, including this snippet from a review in the Poetical Register and Repository of Fugitive Poetry: 'With singular infelicity, he has written a volume which does not contain a single good line.
