Bell was the author of Out of this Furnace (1941), the best labor novel to emerge from the Pittsburgh mill experience. Born Thomas Belecjak, he grew up in Braddock, PA, the son of a steel worker and bartender, and gained experience by working in the mills, machine shops, etc. This novel is about a couple in their forties in Manhattan -- Joel has a white collar job at a bank, and until the events of this novel, led a nondescript and incurious life, but at some point something clicks in him and he throws his entire soul and energy in organizing the bank workers into a union.
