Unique hand pictured book of drawings of PIGS - done with eyes closed! 1893-1895

Paperback. Of unknown ownership and place of origin, but there is a program for Madame Patey's Farewell Tour from 1894 laid in, with performances in Ilkley and Otley, both small towns NW of Leeds. Oblong sea-green pages (approximately 8.5 x 11 inches; 22 x 28 cm) interleaved with thin tissue blotting paper. With close to 80 drawings of pigs, the majority in black ink, but some in pencil, all signed and dated by the artists. We have come to the conclusion that this was the project of a child whose instructions to his parents' guests at dinner or Christmas, etc., is that each of them had to draw a picture of a pig, including an eye or two, and definitely a tail - with their eyes closed! Afterwards they were allowed to open their eyes and fill in the body of their drawings in black ink. Only this can account for eyeballs and tails quite detached from the pigs, giving some of them a Picasso-like cubism or Miro-like deconstruction of the attributes that make up a pig. A whimsical project, with many guests, including the ever-present Ramsbottoms, contributing more than one pig if there were subsequent visits. Very Good. Item #H5099
