History of the Organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South

Nashville, Tenn. A. H. Redford, 1871. First printing. Hardcover. First edition, 1871. 8vo, original embossed lavender cloth, gilt titled on spine, good copy with moderate rubbing and shelfwear, soil and darkening to cloth, hinges tight and sound, contents very good but quite foxed throughout. RARE in the original edition. The history of this church is tied to the history of slavery and the treatment of African-Americans and was the result of a schism with their northern brethren in 1844, when slave-owning Methodists split from the Methodist Church (contra the many passages in Wesley's writings against slavery), and remained a separate polity till 1939, when they joined again with the north. There were hundreds of thousands of slaves who belonged to MEC,S until after the Civil War, when many migrated to the AME. Good. Item #H5211
