The Corrector, or, Independent American, Nos. 1 & 2 (1815-1816)

New York: 1815-1816. Paperback. First two numbers of this important early American political journal, disbound, very good, title page very neatly lined, some tanning to edges, 48 & 50 pp. Anonymously published, with essays and articles (The Fourth of July, Naval Chronicle) and critical analyses of other journals and published pieces. As well, there are published critiques of major American figures, only identified, if at all, by the first letters of their names. Some are easy to figure out, like De Witt Clinton, and others have been filled in with pencil by their original owner, which might be a guess as good as ours, but we assume that proximity in time gives the owner's picks more credence. Thus the sketch of the character of ____ ____ is identified as Ambrose Spencer (an important NY jurist), whereas one of our colleagues has surmised that it is Aaron Burr. Character of the A._______ G.________ (the Attorney General) the reader has identified as "Mat van Buren" (Martin Van Buren). "Another Character" is identified as Solomon Southwick (a newspaper publisher and politico who was based in Albany and who founded the Anti-Masonic Party). A Portrait is identified simply as Armstrong. In the second volume "An Unfinished Sketch of a Finished Character" the reader guesses is Jacob Barker (an American financier and attorney). Mr. E____T is Mr. Emmet. The C********R is The Chancellor. Thus, the pencilled notes in this one instance are of great help! Very Good. Item #H5416
