The Kingdom and the Cave -- inscribed by the author's father, Conrad Aiken, to his dermatologist Richard Hoffmann and Hoffmann's grandson

London and New York: Abelard-Schuman, C. 1960. Hardcover. First edition, later issue in beige cloth with red lettering, in dust jacket, inscribed by Conrad Aiken: 'For the Grandson who said we needn't be afraid of clay [?], and his Grandfather, Richard Hoffmann, with continuing gratitude from Conrad Aiken, 1963.' Book very good, jacket good with some wear and loss. Author's first novel, written when she was 17. Hoffmann, who emigrated from Vienna, was a fixture of Cambridge MA intellectual society and as a dermatologist treated a number of well known figures including Aiken and E. E. Cummings. He was also friendly with Hermann Hesse and other European intellectuals. Nice inscription! Very Good / good. Item #H6507
