Souvenir of the "Old Roman" Banquet given by the Thurman Club in honour of Allen G. Thurman on his 77th Birthday Anniversary, Thursday, November Thirteen, Eighteen Hundred and Ninety

Columbus, OH: Thurman Club, 1891. First printing. Hardcover. Tall 8vo, pale gray embossed paper covered boards lettered in red, about very good, some soil and rubbing to binding, small square cut in first blank (probably someone's signature). Contents very good. Frontispiece in browntone of Thurman, 200 pp, with the menu (starts with green turtle, moves to fish, beef and potted quail), reprinting the toasts and testimonials, including a 6 pp. toast by Grover Cleveland. Thurman was a jurist and politician, who became President Pro Tempore of the US Senate, and was Cleveland's choice as running mate for the 1888 election, as Hendricks, the VP, had died in office. By then Thurman, in his seventies, did not campaign energetically, and they lost the election, although they won the popular vote (a la Hillary Clinton). Cleveland was the only politician to serve two non-consecutive terms as president, elected again in 1892. Very Good. Item #H6581
