Retrospections of an Active Life, 5 volumes

New York & Garden City: The Baker & Taylor Co. / Doubleday, Page, 1909-1913. Hardcover. First editions of each volume, the first three published in 1909 by Baker and Taylor, the last two by Doubleday, Page -- at which point the author, who had taken his narrative up to 1879, must have fizzled out. Most sellers only have the first three volumes. Ours is in very good condition, overall, with light soil and wear to cloth, the last two volumes have dulling to spines and bit of soil to endpapers and page tops, overall very good. Journalist and diplomat, Bigelow was appointed by Lincoln to be American consul in Paris in 1861 and played an active role and thwarting French and British interests from providing assistance to the Confederates. He later served after the war in a similar role in Germany and became friendly with Bismarck. Very Good. Item #H8177
