2 large devotional Valentines of the mid-18th century, framed, probably German.

Images measure approximately 11.75 x 7.5 inches; the frames measure 14 x 9.75 inches. Not examined outside the frames. With fine scissor and knife work and lovely hand colored floral decorations and central miniatures painted in gouache, in the one, of Madonna and infant Jesus, in the other of St. John the Baptist. Both show some stains and darkening and light wear to frames. Very much in the manner of a smaller example cited on p. 127 of Frank Staff's "The Valentine and its Origins" (1969), a copy of which will be included with these two Valentines. His example, measuring 8x6 inches, of St. Therese, is so similar to ours that they could have been made by the same artisan. Item #H8235
