1890s sketchbook of drawings, many of Duer family children, from Baltimore MD

Hardcover. Oblong small quarto (10 x 7.5 inches), leather backed cloth boards, with a fine large green printed label of William Minifie & Son, Draughtsman's Depot, Baltimore. About 35 pages of sketches, almost all in pencil, and perhaps 20 loose drawings on slips of paper with a range of measurements, almost certainly by one of the members of the Duer family, considering the number of Duer children (and a few adults) portrayed. This was a large family with German roots residing in Pikesville, MD, a northwest suburb of Baltimore. The most famous of the Duer children was Douglas Duer (1887-1964), who became a well known artist associated with the Brandywine School (Howard Pyle, for one) and who illustrated Zane Grey's "Riders of the Purple Sage" in 1912. He is depicted in this sketchbook as a young boy of about seven with long tresses. There were several Duer children, and all of them are portrayed in this book. It is unlikely to be Douglas's own work, and if we had to guess, it would be Isabel Duer (1878-1946); Douglas was the youngest of five children. Some pictures are mere sketches or ideas, others more filled in, and many subjects are named. A sweet remnant from an artistically minded family. Very Good. Item #H8243
