Philadelphia: Chandler/American Iron & Steel Association, 1873. Hardcover. 1873, Edition not stated. Presumed First Edition.

This appears to be US Senator Charles Sumner's (Mass., US Senator 1851 - 1874) personal copy, with his name and title present in a contemporary hand to the bound-in original cover. Sumner (1811-1874), was the famed Boston anti-slavery orator, and member of the Massachusetts delegation to the US Senate, serving with distinction from 1851 until his death in 1874, probably best known today for his 1856 antislavery speech, that provoked Congressman Preston Brooks' (South Carolina) attack on Sumner in the senate chamber.

Binding is hardcover, green cloth with gilt title to spine. This binding is a professional, ca.1950, rebinding, with the original pale yellow front and rear paper covers -with title, author and publication details listed- in place within this later binding.

Size is octavo/8vo (6.1 x 9.1 inches).

Condition is Very Good, with light shelf wear, light handling soil, and a bookplate at the paste down end paper, as well as a stamp showing that this was once held as part of a Harvard University collection. Very Good. Item #d002246
