Die Sammlung Albert Figdor - Wien, 5 volumes complete (1930 landmark auction catalog of decorative art)
Wien & Berlin: Artaria / Paul Cassirer, 1930. First Printing. 5 volumes, quarto (13 x 9.5 inches), stiff cream wraps lettered in gilt, good set with wear, soil, chips, edgewear to wraps, light restoration along front joint to fifth volume, general moderate wear to the set, but all are firmly bound, contents very good, illustrations intact, etc. The auction took place from June 11, 1930 - June 13, 1930 (vols. 1 and 2: tapestry, decorative arts, furniture) in Vienna in the ballroom of the Schwarzenberg Casino, and from September 29, 1930 - September 30, 1930 (vols. 3-5: paintings, sculptures, small boxes, etc.) in Berlin at the Hotel Esplanade. The Austrian banker A. Figdor created what was probably the most important private collection of his time with early decorative arts. The most important scholars of the time edited his auction catalogue. Sometimes accompanied by a 6th volume "handkatalog" but not present. The Viennese banker (d. 1927) attempted at least twice to bequeath his collection, and both times the deal fell through for whatever reason. Good. Item #h24174
