The Fire Lands Pioneer, Vol. XIII, July 1878 (NW Ohio history)

Sandusky, OH: Fire Lands Historical Society, 1878. Wraps. Original pale green wraps, very good, title written in ink on spine, 1.5 inch loss to spine paper at bottom, contents very good. 144 pp. contents include articles on Sandusky city, early settlers of the Peninsula, aboriginal fire lands, mental and moral characteristics of the pioneers, sketch of Benjamin Summers, Indian works on the Huron, sketch of John H. Niles, Monroeville past and present, Camp Avery in 1812, the Maple city church, Chronicle of Hartland, dairy products of the reserve, and much else. The Firelands, or Sufferers' Lands, tract was located at the western end of the Connecticut Western Reserve in what is now the U.S. state of Ohio. It was legislatively established in 1792, as the "Sufferers' Lands", and later became named "Fire Lands" because the resale of the land was intended as financial restitution for residents of the Connecticut towns of Danbury, Fairfield, Greenwich, Groton, New Haven, New London, Norwalk, and Ridgefield. Their homes had been burned in 1779 and 1781 by British forces during the American Revolutionary War. However, most of the settlement of the area did not occur until after the War of 1812. They incorporate much of Erie County, Huron County, and parts of Ottawa County. Very good. Item #h42161
