1929 Photo album, Seville Spain, Jerez, Ocuna, southern Spain
Hardcover. 15.5 x 11.5 inches in flexible papercovered boards in a modernist pattern, with close to 100 photos, all neatly captioned, mainly 4.5 x 3.5" photos, some larger and commercially obtained tourist photos. Taken probably by a member of the Slack family, as there are multiple images showing an older man, John Slack, and a younger woman, Dorothy Slack. Photos concentrate on local architecture and street scenes, most images weirdly bereft of people. Some are of Alphonse Grosso and his studio, probably Alfonso Grosso Sanchez (1893-1983), a Seville painter whose work was done through traditional, religious, and portrait themes. Much of his work depicts Andalusian characters, like dancers, gypsies, bullfighters, and cantaoras. Mostly concentrated around Seville, other places mentioned are Jerez, Osuna, Marchena, Lebrija, Carmona, Ecija, but the main concentration of photos is Seville, its architecture, a bullfight, churches, cathedral, parks, etc. Very good.
