Group of 12 1850s American song sheets, published by Scroggy in Philadelphia, etc.
Philadelphia: Scroggy, 1850s. A handsome group of 12 song sheets in very good condition, exceptions noted. Almost all published by Scroggy in Philadelphia, plus one Civil War song sheet. In no particular order, we have: 1) The Bold Privateer. Philadelphia: Scroggy, Ca. 1855. 8.5 x 4.5 inches, typographical border. Very good bright copy. Not in AAS; this particular version NOT in the LOC America Singing Collection, and is no.171d in Wolf's American Song Sheets. 2) Mountain Wave, by Henry W. Rockwell. Philadelphia: T. M. Scroggy, Ca. 1855. 9.25 x 6 inches, very good, light wear. AAS identifies the author as Rockwell and dates it 1853-1857. A copy is in the America Singing Library of Congress collection. Wolf's "American Song Sheets" no. 169c: also known under the title, Bold Brave Crew, Song of the Sea. 3) Green Monsters’ Song. Philadelphia: Scroggy, Ca. 1855. 12 x 4.75 inches, typographical border. Very good with light wear and toning, curling to top edge. Concerns the fire companies of Philadelphia, the green monster being a fire engine of the time. AAS dates this 1853-57; it is in the LOC America Singing Collection, and is no. 827 in Wolf's American Song Sheets. 4) Ancient Rams No. 2 of Southwark. Philadelphia: Scroggy, Ca. 1855. 9 x 6 inches, typographical border. Very good with light wear and toning. One of a number of song sheets published by Scoggy about fire companies in Philadelphia. AAS dates this 1853-57; it is NOT in the LOC America Singing Collection, and is no. 41 in Wolf's American Song Sheets. 5) Indian Maid of the Chapparal, by George Bomberger in Mexico. Philadelphia: Scroggy, 1852. 10 x 5.25 inches, typographical border, very good with some tanning, corner wear, light wear to top edge. AAS dates this 1852; it is in the LOC America Singing Collection, and is no. 1046 in Wolf's American Song Sheets. 6) The Bed-Bugs’ Song, by T. M. Scroggy. Philadelphia: Scroggy, Ca. 1855. 9.5 x 6 inches, typographical border. Very good crisp copy. One of a number of song sheets published by Scoggy about fire companies in Philadelphia, this one penned by the publisher himself. AAS dates this 1853-57; it is in the LOC America Singing Collection, and is no.122 in Wolf's American Song Sheets. 7) I’m Off For Charleston [in African-American dialect]. Philadelphia: Scroggy, Ca. 1855. 8 x 6.25 inches, typographical border. Very good with darkening and tanning to borders, light corner wear and loss to lower left. AAS dates this 1853-57; this particular iteration NOT in the LOC America Singing Collection, and is no.1021f in Wolf's American Song Sheets. A popular song in dialect, printed by several publishers. 8) Franklin Hose Song. Philadelphia: Scroggy, Ca. 1855. 9.5 x 6 inches, typographical border. Very good with light wear and toning, faint dampstain to lower left corner. One of a number of song sheets published by Scoggy about fire companies in Philadelphia. AAS dates this 1853-57; it is NOT in the LOC America Singing Collection, and is no. 674 in Wolf's American Song Sheets. 9) The Paupers, by John L. Zieber. Philadelphia: Scroggy, Ca. 1855. 9.5 x 6 inches, typographical border. Very good with faint waterstains, tanning to borders, light edgewear. AAS dates this 1853-57; NOT in the LOC America Singing Collection, and is no. 1859 in Wolf's American Song Sheets. Zieber was a Philadelphian who not only wrote broadside ballads but published them as well. 10) The Corkers, by Jack Williams. Philadelphia: Scroggy, Ca. 1855. 9.5 x 6 inches, typographical border. Very good crisp copy. One of a number of song sheets published by Scoggy about fire companies in Philadelphia. AAS dates this 1853-57; it is in the LOC America Singing Collection, and is no. 391 in Wolf's American Song Sheets. 11) Good Will Hose Song. Philadelphia: Scroggy, Ca. 1855. 7 x 5 inches, typographical border. Very good, light tanning and wear, corner loss. One of a number of song sheets published by Scoggy about fire companies in Philadelphia. AAS dates this 1853-57; it is NOT in the LOC America Singing Collection, and is no. 788 in Wolf's American Song Sheets; both AAS and Wolf identify this as being published by Scroggy, which would make sense, but the Wolf measurements are 24.8 cm in height as opposed to 18.5 cm in height for ours, so possibly a remainder version or later printing? 12) We Are for the Union [Pennsylvania Civil War song, ca. 1863]. NP: NP, Ca. 1863. 7.5 x 4.5 inches, very good. This edition not in Wolf, not in AAS, but is in the LOC America Singing collection. A song generally associated with the Pennsylvania volunteers during the Civil War. Very good. Item #h43138
