The Hayes polar expedition of 1860, led by American explorer Isaac Israel Hayes, set out from Boston aboard the United States to explore the region north of Baffin Bay and search for an open polar sea. Though hindered by ice and forced to turn back at about 81°35 N, the journey contributed valuable geographic and magnetic data and helped revive American interest in Arctic exploration after the Franklin searches.
