Hardcover. 8vo, publisher's brick cloth stamped in gilt, good with moderate wear and loss to spine ends, contents very good, last few pages bound in a bid proudly which has led to mild edgewear to one plate, and another plate (facing p. 117) has very old tape repair with the tape leaving a dark brown stain. With plates and 3 single-page tinted lithographed maps. The Hayes polar expedition of 1860, led by American explorer Isaac Israel Hayes, set out from Boston aboard the United States to explore the region north of Baffin Bay and search for an open polar sea. Though hindered by ice and forced to turn back at about 81°35 N, the journey contributed valuable geographic and magnetic data and helped revive American interest in Arctic exploration after the Franklin searches.
