NY: New York: Harpers, 1968-1971. Wraps. 3 issues. Softcover, very good. "The Steps of the Pentagon" takes up most of the first issue. It chronicles Mailer's participation in the October 21, 1967, anti-Vietnam War march on the Pentagon, where he was arrested. The narrative, written in the third person, explores his experience, the atmosphere of the protest, and the confrontation between demonstrators and authorities. It was later incorporated into "The Armies of the Night," which won the Pulitzer for nonfiction and the National Book Award. "Miami Beach and Chicago" is a chronicle that compares the Democratic and Republican conventions and became the basis for his "non-fiction novel," Miami and the Siege of Chicago. The November 1968 issue also had work by James Dickey, William Stafford, Larry King and Stanley Crouch. "The Prisoner of Sex" is Mailer's reaction to second-wave feminism. That issue also features poets Paul Celan and W. H. Auden. Very good. Item #h44541
