The Dictionary, Historical and Critical (1737), Vol. IV only: M-R

London: J. J. and P. Knapton, et al. 1737. Hardcover. Vol. IV only. Large quarto, 14.5 x 9.25 inches, old half leather, marbled boards, good copy with quite a bit of rubbing and wear to binding, old leather patching to spine ends and along outer joints, contents very good and bright, inner hinges weak. 944 pp. Extra postage required for this large, heavy book. It is interesting how John Milton is depicted as chiefly known as an apologist for Charles I, as if his poetry was merely an afterthought, and also because Milton was precisely the opposite: he was a fierce opponent and vocal supporter of his execution, acting as a key propagandist for the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell, arguing that monarchical tyranny warranted the removal of the king.
