Sultan to Sultan; Adventures Among the Masai and Other Tribes of East Africa - inscribed to childhood friend Rachel Larimer Mellon

Boston: Arena Publishing, 1892. First Edition. Hardcover. No. 566 of an unknown limitation. Large 8vo, 9.5 x 7.25 inches, publisher's beveled red cloth stamped in gilt, very good, small spot to front cover, minor exlibrary marks from the Ligonier Valley Library (a couple stamps, number on spine now faded, light ink and pencil notations to copyright page, evidence of pocket removal to rear pastedown). Inscribed on early blank, "Mrs. James R. Mellon, My first and only playmate in the old days of my childhood days in Pittsburgh -- Let this be as a renewal and continuance of friendship. May French-Sheldon, 1893, Nov. 18th." 436 pp, illustrated. Rachel Larimer Mellon was from a prominent Pittsburgh family; her husband, James Ross Mellon was the son of Mellon Bank founder Thomas Mellon and was himself a banker, businessman, railroad magnate and philanthropist. The Mellons made their redoubt in Ligonier, a woodsy valley 60 miles east of Pittsburgh, and many of the Mellons would give their books to the local library over the years, which would sell them off periodically several decades ago. Very good. Item #h45435
