Poems (Ca. 1900 handwritten book of illustrations, poems, etc. by Dorchester MA girl of 10-12 years old)
Dorchester, MA: Self Published, Ca. 1900s. Hardcover. 9 x 5.75 inches, handmade book, with boards covered in linen with title, author and illustrations in ink on cover, housing approximately 40 loose sheets of various sizes, with 7 full-page ink illustrations, over 20 poems, often with little vignette illustrations, one small painting in color of a "Filipino girl," several title pages for various poems or sections of this book, and a 3 pp. typewritten Christmas story. One of the title pages dated 1900 with pencil note in a later hand saying that Barstow would have been 12 years old in July 1900. Another poem is written on the back of a printed sheet from Dorchester Employment and Relief Society, dated 1901). We could not find an exact match online for an Elizabeth Barstow born in 1888 likely in Massachusetts -- the nearest was a Harriet Elizabeth Barstow born in 1888. But we're not the most gifted at this kind of research. A charming book, great illustrations, lively child's verse. Our favorite in the book is a lovely ink sketch of a Crow woman (Native American).
