Pittsburgh: Hubbard's Views et al. 1936. Pittsburgh: Hubbard's Views et al. ca. 1930s. Lot of 46 real photo postcards of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Most are of the devastating St. Patrick's Day flood of 1936, where river levels reached 46 feet and destroyed houses, businesses, and steel mills, putting thousands of steel workers out of work and flooding downtown to the point that it looked like Venice. Includes many images of flooding along the towns NE of Pittsburgh along the Allegheny River: around Cheswick, West Apollo, Sharpsburg, Tarentum, Harmarville, Springdale, and other towns along the river, washed out buildings, mills, dams, and power stations, plus two unrelated ones of skiing in the Laurel Mountains at Ligonier. Each card measures 6 by 4 inches, all but two blank. Very good. Edges of flood postcards curled, extremities toned, else bright and unmarked and there are several duplicates of an image taken from above Sharpsburg. Uncommon images, as most photographers concentrated on the more sexy photos of downtown Pittsburgh, and these river towns NE of Pittsburgh did not get as much attention in the media. Good.
