Things of the Kingdom, A Series of Essays, Presentation Copy Signed to Judge Malcolm Hay from Albree's son Joseph

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott, 1881. First edition. Hardcover. Presentation copy, signed to Pittsburgh Judge Malcolm Hay from Albree's son Joseph. 8vo. in plum cloth with gilt titles and decoration, top edge gilt. 276pp. frontis of Albree. Very good. Wear to spine ends and corners, spine and boards toned. Endpapers foxed, internally clean and unmarked. Essays on the Jewish Nation, prayer, Sabbath, sin, the coming of Christ, and prison reform. The Historic Pittsburgh website has this to say about Albree: "George Albree was born on February 1, 1803, and moved from Salem, Massachusetts to Pittsburgh in 1829. He first worked for his brother, John, who operated a shoe store in Pittsburgh on the corner of Market Street and Diamond, but soon opened his own wholesale shoe store at No. 71 Wood Street, on the corner of Fourth Street. Although the store suffered $4,750 in damages in the Great Fire of 1845, it flourished and was widely considered to be the oldest shoe store in the west. George Albree retired from active participation in the business in 1876 and died on February 2, 1890" (Actually he died February 20, 1880). A very literate shoe-seller indeed, Albree also sat on the board of the Allegheny Work House and was a committed churchman, although his son, in the preface, writes that Albree had in the last fifteen years of his life moved away from a strict Presbyterianism to a more nuanced religious outlook, while adhering to the bedrock Calvinism of his faith. Very Good. Item #z015332
