Lot of Kubly items, including an unpublished manuscript, letters and photographs, and a copy of 'At Large' signed by Kay Boyle
ca. 1945-1985. 1. Unpublished manuscript by Herbert Kubly, ca. 1945, set around Pittsburgh artists and the art scene, approx. 300 pages, single-sided on thin typing paper. Not quite fiction, the manuscript seems to surround the narrative of Dick Murray, a Carnegie native serving in the Armed Forces forces duing WWII, and Anne Menzl, a Pittsburgh artist and graduate of Margaret Morrison College, the ladies' college at Carnegie Tech. The manuscript is divided into sections with "Rediscovered...1964" written on the verso of the last page. At the rear of the manuscript is a love letter, dated 1944, from Murray to Menzl, referring to Menzl's recent opening and play script in which Dick's longing for Anne is poignant 2. Another unpublished manuscript called "Prelude to a Stamp", 16pp. 3. 4 pen and ink illustrations by Anne Menzl, accompanied by a return envelope from TIME Magazine, dated 1946, suggesting these images were offered, if not used, for publication. 4. 14 original photographs, ca. 1945, documenting the activities of the Allegheny Artist's League, including candid photographs of its members; among them is certainly Anne Menzl, with several photographs of her paintings also included in the lot. It is unclear whether Dick Murray appears in any of the images. 5. Handbill for a performance of a play written by Kubly, "Men to the Sea". 6. 2 later letters from Kubly, ca. 1984, to a Mrs. Anne Carroll, likely the married name of Anne Menzl, 2 pages each, portraying a cherished friendship between Kubly and Carroll through the years. 7. First edition copy of Kubly's best known work, "At Large", SIGNED by Kay Boyle who also offered the introduction for the volume; fine in a near fine dust jacket. A large lot with many interesting pieces relating to the Pittsburgh Art Scene ca. WWII and the writer Kubly. Very Good +. Item #z03838
