Hand Colored Etching of Temple of Castor and Pollux / Tempio dei Dioscuri, Rome 1845

Rome: 1845. 1845 hand painted etching of the Temple of Castor and Pollux. Image measures 3.25 x 5.5 inches on sheet measuring 5.25 x 7.5, and mounted on thin backing paper, 8.75 x 12. The image is meticulously colored in gouache with a painted black border. Image area is in fine condition with minor scuffing to a few areas of the border, and light chipping/wear to the backing paper. Scene is titled and dated on the backing paper in pencil. The Temple of Castor and Pollux is an ancient edifice in the Roman Forum, originally built in gratitude for victory at the Battle of Lake Regillus (495 BC). Castor and Pollux (Greek Polydeuces) were the Dioscuri, the "twins" of Gemini, the twin sons of Zeus (Jupiter) and Leda. Their cult came to Rome from Greece via Magna Graecia and the Greek culture of Southern Italy. Very Good +. Item #z04094
