The Hawarden Visitors' Hand-Book, with Gladstone signature

Chester: Phillipson & Eastgate Row, 1890. Hardcover. Revised edition, 1890. Red decorative cloth 8vo, 38pp. With two real mounted photographs of William and Catherine Gladstone, as well as several engravings and folding map at rear. With signature of William Gladstone, clipped from a letter, loosely inserted. In original mailing envelope addressed to James Scott, Esq. of Leith and apparently postmarked in 1880, before this book's publication but during one of Gladstone's appointments as Prime Minister. Scott was possibly the son of the famed clockmaker. William Ewart Gladstone (29 December 1809 - 19 May 1898), was a British Liberal politician. In a career lasting over sixty years, he served as Prime Minister four separate times (1868-1874, 1880-1885, February-July 1886 and 1892-1894), more than any other person. Gladstone was also Britain's oldest Prime Minister, 84 when he resigned for the last time. He had also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times. Book is in VG+ condition with light sunning and minor soil to boards, some wear to the front hinge. Scarce with only 6 copies in OCLC. Very Good +. Item #z05661
