Includes Almoran and Hamet (1791), Solyman and Almena (1790), the Sincere Huron (1786), Zadig or the Book of Fate (1780), and The History of Jonathan Wild the Great (1782), bound curiously together with an Irish political pamphlet titled the Celebrated Political Letters of Somers to the Right Honorable Mr. Douglas... (1794). The pamphlet contains letters to Sylvester Douglas, later 1st Baron Glenbervie, chief secretary of Ireland under William Pitt the Younger, and offers Douglas advice on how best to govern. The author employs the psudonyms Somers, Probus, and Maynard, but appears to have been Dublin barrister John Kells, by whom some of the letters are autographed. 1780s-1790s. Hardcover, 8vo. in leather backed patterned paper boards with leather title. Varying paginations, with copper plate illustrations. Good. Spine leather worn, with cracking, loss to extremities and evidence of repair. Front board detached, rear board nearly detached. Light foxing throughout. Illustrations and text remain bright.
